Marine Research & Education “What is a scientist after all? It is a curious man looking through a keyhole,  the keyhole of nature, trying to know what’s going on.”                   -Jacques-Yves Cousteau At Catalina Explorer we make our living from the sea, and we believe that we have a responsibility to give back. We accomplish this through non-invasive marine research, marine science education, supporting Marine Protected Areas, and being members of the NOAA Large Whale Disentanglement Team.   Whale Photo Identification Aboard each of our trips will be a whale Photo Identification Specialist that will documenting individual whales for research in conjunction with the Aquarium of the Pacific and Cascadia Research. Our data is combined with data from researchers in other areas creating a larger picture of the individual whale’s movements. If you are intersted in becoming a Photo ID Specialist Contact us. Marine Science Floating Labs We offer Marine Science Floating Labs for school groups. These Labs include: Plankton Lab, Fish ID/Morphology Lab, Physical Oceanography Lab, and Sediment Sampling Lab. Optional labs include Water Chemistry Lab and a combo trip combining the Floating Lab & Whale Watching. Our Captain and Crew have years of experience teaching marine science programs. For more info Contact us. NOAA Whale Disentanglement “Over 300,000 Cetaceans die each year from entanglement in fishing gear, bycatch is causing one death every two minutes.” - WWF 2011   The team at Catalina Explorer is a proud member of the NOAA Whale Disentanglement Network, and our vessel and crew are ready to assist when needed for the Long Beach, and Los Angeles areas. Our team has been specially trained by NOAA to safely help entangled whales. Marine Protected Areas We support Marine Protected Areas, and Captain Carl was chosen by the California Dept. of Fish & Game to become a Member of the the South Coast Regional Stakeholder Group in 2008 and 2009. This group designed our MPAs, and Carl was co-lead for the Science/Conservation based proposal for the California Dept. of Fish & Game. Management areas were adopted by the State December 15th, 2010 and went into effect January 1st, 2012.  At Catalina Explorer we believe actions are stronger than words, and we continue to support the Southern California Marine Protected Areas through our educational programs. To get more information about our MPAs                dowlnoad the Guide book:
